Nowadays there are powerful non-surgical techniques that allow you to restore that youthful appearance to your face that you long for. One of those alternatives is laser facial rejuvenation and here we are going to explain what it consists of.
How does laser facial rejuvenation work?
There are two forms of laser resurfacing. First there is carbon dioxide (CO2) and erbium lasers. These lasers act evenly on the skin in the treatment area.
The other form of laser resurfacing is called fractional CO2 laser treatment.
Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing involves using the laser to drill numerous narrow columns of holes deep into the skin layers, but the surrounding skin remains intact and untreated.
CO2 laser rejuvenation
CO2 laser resurfacing has been used for years to treat different skin conditions. A newer generation of CO2 laser resurfacing uses very short pulsed (ultrapulsed) light energy or continuous light beams that are emitted in a scanning pattern to very precisely remove thin layers of skin with minimal heat damage to the surrounding structures.
Recovery time with CO2 laser resurfacing is up to two weeks.
Erbium laser rejuvenation
Erbium laser resurfacing is designed to remove superficial and moderately deep lines and wrinkles on the face and requires only local anesthesia. This laser can also be used on the hands, neck, or chest.
One of the benefits of erbium laser resurfacing is minimal injury to surrounding tissue. This laser is gentler than CO2 lasers, so your recovery time should be faster.
If you have a darker skin tone, erbium laser resurfacing may be a good option. Recovery time with erbium laser resurfacing is a full week.
Fractional laser resurfacing
Because fractional CO2 laser resurfacing sends many narrow columns of laser light into the skin, much of the skin is left uninjured. Your skin tightens as the collagen between the treated laser holes contracts.
The benefit of this type of laser is that it is gentler on the skin. Recovery time with fractional laser resurfacing is one full week.
