What advantages does botulinum toxin have for bruxism?

Botulinum toxin is well known as a treatment for facial wrinkles, but this product has many other effective and therapeutic uses. We’ve talked about botulinum toxin as a treatment for excessive armpit sweating (hyperhidrosis), but did you know that it can also be used to treat bruxism? Here we explain how it is used and what without its advantages.

But first, what is bruxism?

Bruxism, commonly known as teeth grinding, is a condition that affects both men and women. People with bruxism may clench or grind their teeth when awake, and many also grind their teeth while sleeping.

Severe bruxism can cause jaw disorders, tooth damage, headaches, and other problems. Treatment for bruxism often involves mouth guards, dental correction, or physical therapy.

In recent years, many have found great relief using botulinum toxin as a treatment for this condition.

Botox treatment for teeth grinding

Botulinum toxin treatment was used for the first time in cosmetic anti-wrinkle treatment. As we said  here , it is used to temporarily paralyze muscles. This toxin is equally useful in the treatment of conditions marked by muscle spasms, such as facial dystonia.

Using a small amount on the lower jaw muscle is proven to reduce pain and tension. People who suffer from problems related to bruxism apply botulinum toxin to the masseter muscle, which is located under the frontal and temporal muscles of the forehead.

Temporomandibular joint problems can also be the reason behind teeth grinding. Only botulinum toxin treatment is a non-surgical alternative to other treatments. Some palliative and invasive techniques include analgesics and relaxation techniques or arthrocentesis.

Advantages of botulinum toxin to treat bruxism

The benefits of botulinum toxin for bruxism include:

     ·      Less teeth grinding

     ·      Better sleep

     ·     Less jaw and neck pain.

     ·     Fewer headaches

     ·      Prevents damage to teeth and jaw.

As an added benefit, many patients who suffer from bruxism develop enlarged masseter muscles to the point of causing a more pronounced or square appearance to the jawline. After botulinum toxin treatment, you may notice a thinner, more “V”-shaped jawline.
