Did you know that botulinum toxin is used to treat bruxism?

Botulinum toxin is generally related to aesthetic treatments such as reducing the signs of aging and giving the face a younger appearance. However, this neurotoxin also serves to treat conditions such as bruxism. Here we tell you.

What is bruxism?

Bruxism is a common condition characterized by constant, involuntary grinding of the teeth and/or clenching of the jaw. Bruxism can occur both during the day and at night while you sleep.

This tension along the jaw can cause a variety of symptoms including jaw pain, clicking, or tightness of the jaw muscles that limits how much you can open your jaw (sometimes known as lockjaw), tension headaches, and migraines. , earaches, tooth or gum sensitivity, and damage to tooth enamel.

Additionally, constant tension on the masseter muscles, which are the muscles that connect the cheek and jaw and are responsible for chewing, can cause the jawline to take on a severe square shape as the muscles along the jaw line grow.

While many people suffer from chronic jaw clenching and teeth grinding, the risk of potential damage to the teeth and the pain that bruxism can cause are two very compelling reasons to seek treatment options.

How does botulinum toxin help treat bruxism?

When   botulinum toxin A   is injected into the masseter or temporalis muscles, which are the main muscles that contract when chewing, the neurotoxin injection works to relax those muscles.

This helps release tension to relieve pain caused by chronic jaw clenching. It can also help soften the square jaw line that can occur due to hypertrophy (overuse) of the masseter muscles.

Patients who receive the treatment will begin to see the effects of botulinum toxin between one and three days after the procedure, which will last approximately three months. Treatment can be repeated once the effects wear off to achieve long-lasting reduction in pain and damage.
